Failed-message queues need an operational workflow

Moving a failed message to a separate queue initially only prevents it from blocking normal processing. Completing the underlying operation correctly later requires a traceable recovery workflow.

Turn a technical failure into a resolvable task

  • Show the cause, business reference and last successful processing step.
  • Distinguish temporary interruptions from invalid input data.
  • Limit retries and notify the responsible people about persistent failures.
  • Provide controlled reprocessing after the cause has been corrected.

Manual approval should not require someone to copy an entire message out of a log file. A restricted interface with the necessary permissions and a visible processing state is more useful. Confidential payloads should not appear unfiltered in error messages.

Test the workflow using an intentionally invalid message: detect it, assign responsibility, correct it, retry processing and verify the outcome. This complete sequence shows whether the integration can be operated in everyday work.
