Error messages need a clear path to correction

When input is rejected, the person using the form needs an understandable explanation and a way to correct it. Feedback should identify the affected field and explain what is expected. Preserve input that is already valid wherever possible.

Check feedback in context

  • Associate each error message with the relevant field.
  • Convey essential information in text as well as visual styling.
  • Provide understandable orientation when several errors occur.
  • Confirm successful completion clearly after correction.

Wording should match the business situation. “Invalid input” is less helpful than an explanation of the required format. Internal database or interface errors are unsuitable and may expose technical details.

Test the complete correction path with a keyboard and assistive technology. This reveals whether an error is merely visible or can actually be identified and resolved independently.
