Turn a defect into a permanent regression test
A report saying “the application does not work” rarely provides enough detail for a dependable correction. The affected operation, user role, sanitized data example and expected outcome make the problem actionable. Together they provide the basis for a test that exposes the original defect.
Test the trigger, not a coincidence
- Capture the smallest data arrangement that reproduces the failure.
- Make the test fail before applying the correction, then run it again.
- Verify the business result and relevant side effects.
- Replace personal information with suitable synthetic test data.
For an incorrect status transition, a test should check more than a successful response. Read the record again, confirm that the intended state was saved and check that a second notification was not produced. This describes the function's contract rather than one particular implementation.
A small, understandable regression test also supports later modernization. It explains which behavior must remain stable when dependencies or internal workflows change.
